I'm fundraising walking in memory of my nephew Matahi Poutapu
My nephew was 21 years old when he successfully suicided in July of 2021. He was diagnosed with Schizophrenia in his teenage years and struggled with depression, paranoia and anxiety throughout his life.Everyday we would remind our nephew of just how much he was loved but often this would fall on deaf ears becuase what potential we saw in him was not the potential he saw in himself. My nephew Matahi would constantly tell us the world would be a better place without him in it and our deepest fear was that those demons that consumed his everyday life would take him away from us.
My nephew fought a bloody great fight every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day but sometimes even champions succumb to defeat. Each step I take is in, each steap I make on stand proud and I stand tall....I want my nephew to know that 'he mattered' in this world and no matter what there is no shame in his decision.
