9km. 180 laps. For Lifeline

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15-44. 

On September 10, I’ll be swimming 9 km to raise money for Lifeline.

9 km represents the 9 Australians who die by suicide each day.

Swimming has become such a meaningful part of my life. Over the past year, I’ve spent countless hours in the pool and open water. I’ve gone from swimming because I enjoyed it to setting myself challenges I never thought I’d be capable of.

But there is also something about swimming that makes you spend a lot of time alone with your thoughts. Those long hours in the water can be incredibly quiet and reflective.

And that feels fitting for this challenge.

Mental health struggles can be incredibly isolating, and you never really know what the person next to you might be carrying. Someone can look completely okay on the outside while quietly struggling on the inside.

Lifeline gives people somewhere to turn in those moments. Sometimes, one conversation, one person listening, or simply knowing that someone is there can mean more than we realise.

I want to take something that has brought me so much joy, connection and strength and use it to support an organisation that helps people through some of their darkest moments.

I hope that these 9 km can help turn a statistic into something more — awareness, conversation, connection and support — and remind people that they don’t have to carry everything alone.

Every kilometre is for someone who needs to know that.
