30km done. Halfway
30km done. Halfway.
Today was probably the first time during this training that I genuinely started questioning myself. Can I actually do 60km? What if I’m not capable of finishing it? There’s a lot of time out there alone with your own thoughts, and sometimes they aren’t very kind.
During the run I stopped at Kyneton Cemetery for a while. It was a strange but meaningful moment. Standing there, surrounded by people who once had their own ordinary days, worries, plans and people they loved, it reminded me how lucky we are to simply be here.
It made me think about how easy it is to get caught up in everything that feels difficult, and forget that being alive is pretty incredible in itself.
So I kept running.
30km is a long way, but it’s also only halfway. I still have plenty of doubt about whether I can do the full 60km, but maybe that’s part of it. You don’t always need to feel confident to keep going.
Thank you again to everyone who has donated, messaged me or simply followed along. Knowing that this run is for something bigger than me makes a difference, especially on the days when I doubt myself.
30 down. 30 to go.
My Why Starts Long Before the Finish Line
I just want to start by saying thank you to all my friends and family who have donated to this cause. Honestly, your support has meant more than you probably realise. It's been a huge motivation for me, and I've taken this challenge very seriously.
I was already running and training before this, but my Lifeline fundraising campaign made it much more real. Every donation, every message, and every bit of encouragement reminded me that this isn't just about running 60km. It's about running for something that truly matters.
They say you should think about your "why" before an ultramarathon because when things get really difficult, when it becomes a mental battle, your why is the only thing that keeps you moving when your tank is empty and your legs are sore. I know my why.
We all go through tough times. Some battles are obvious, and some are completely invisible. Mental health doesn't care who you are, and sometimes just getting through the day takes everything you've got. I've learned that we don't always need to have all the answers. Sometimes it's enough to take each day as it comes, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and reach out when things feel too heavy to carry alone.
When I'm out there and my body wants to stop, I'll be thinking about everyone who has supported this cause, and everyone who is fighting battles that most people never see. If this run encourages even one person to check in on a friend, ask for help, or simply realise they're not alone, then every sore muscle and every kilometre will be worth it.
Thank you for being part of my why.
60 km of Becoming
This October, I’ll be taking on a 60 km ultra trail marathon in Portland.
It’s one of the biggest physical challenges I’ve ever set for myself. Long hours on the trail, early starts, tired legs, and moments where it will just come down to one step at a time.
A big part of this journey is what happens around it too. My wife Kim and our son Atlas are part of every training run, giving up time together so I can head out for long hours on the trails. I don’t take that lightly.
Most of my runs are simple. No music, no distractions. Just nature, breath, and thoughts that come and go. There’s something honest about that space that keeps me going back.
I’m running this ultra to raise funds for Lifeline Australia. Their work supporting people through crisis and suicide is something I deeply respect, and I want this challenge to contribute in some small way.
Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing parts of the journey, the training, and what I learn along the way.
Thanks for being part of it.
One step at a time.
